We are The St Leonards Writers

We meet every Wednesday, from 1-3 pm.

Welcome

We are a friendly, inclusive and informal writers’ group and have been going continuously since 2007. We didn’t even stop for Covid, managing to continue meeting via Zoom.

At meetings we encourage members to share their work-in-progress and we write from prompts and sometimes more formal exercises. We review and discuss each other’s work in a positive atmosphere with the aim of building confidence, encouraging creativity and improving our technique.

Members over the years include poets, artists, novelists, playwrights, teachers, storytellers and deep-sea divers as well as published authors. Some members write purely for the pleasure and the enjoyment of sharing their work with friends, everyone gets a chance at each meeting.

The St Leonards’ Writers are happy to welcome new members, whether you are a beginner, an experienced author or anywhere between. Do come along and meet us one Wednesday, your first meeting is free.

Publications

We’ve published five anthologies in the past, the most recent, 40 Stories High, during the middle of the pandemic.

In July 2024 we published our first poetry pamphlet and first pamphlet of flash fiction.

St Leonards Writers Pamphlets

£4.50 each, meet us at the Hastings Book Fair where they will be on sale, or they can be purchased via email contact with the editor.

Why the Seagull?

A seagull has been the group’s emblem for several years. We’ve named him Gulliver, because he is much travelled and can tell many fishy tales. He is a herring gull and doesn’t usually attend meetings.

Where are we?

Our current meeting place is St. Ethelburga’s Church, St. Saviour’s Rd, St. Leonards-on-Sea, TN38 0AP. see Map below.

Despite all those saints, we are not affiliated to the church but St. Ethelburga’s has been a good friend to us. The church is a beautiful, welcoming and accessible venue with a small coffee bar, comfy chairs and convenient loos.

Parking can usually be found on St Saviours Road and Filsham Road, several bus routes run nearby and the church is only 10 minutes’ walk from west St Leonard’s station.
